He That Hath Ears to Hear, Let Him Hear is Jesus’ call to more than physical hearing.
He used it after parables, after warnings, and in the letters to the churches: whoever has ears, let him hear.
The saying assumes that not all who hear with the ear receive with the heart.
It is an invitation and a warning: the word has been spoken; the responsibility to listen now rests on the hearer.
Jesus often ended a parable or a hard saying with this charge. After the parable of the sower He said, “He who has ears, let him hear.” The seed is the word; the difference is the soil. Some hear and do not understand. Some hear and fall away. Some hear and bear fruit. The prophets had already cried, “Hear, O Israel,” and had spoken of people who had ears but did not hear. Jesus took up that line. Revelation repeats it seven times to the churches: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says.” Hearing in Scripture is never only sound waves. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Jesus did not say it to fill silence. He said it because many would hear the story and miss the kingdom. The seed is sown. The Spirit still speaks to the churches. Take care how you hear. Do not be a hearer only. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. His sheep hear His voice and follow Him. Blessed are the ears that hear and the life that keeps the word. The saying is simple. The hearing is the test. Let him hear.
