The Upper Room is the furnished room upstairs
where Jesus ate the last Passover with His disciples,
where He appeared after the resurrection,
and where the apostles waited for the promised Spirit.
It is the place of the new covenant meal,
of washed feet, of troubled questions,
and of the first gathered waiting of the church.
What began as a guest room for a feast
became the room from which
the witness of Jesus went out to the world.
The Lord who met them there
still meets His people
around His table and by His Spirit.
Jesus sent Peter and John to prepare the Passover. A man carrying a jar of water would meet them; they were to follow him to a house, and the master of the house would show them a large upper room, furnished and ready. There Jesus took bread and the cup, gave thanks, and gave them the meal of the new covenant in His blood. There He washed their feet. There He spoke of the Helper who would come. After the resurrection the disciples gathered behind locked doors, and Jesus came and stood among them. After the ascension they went up to the upper room where they were staying—the Eleven and those with them, including the women and Mary the mother of Jesus—and they devoted themselves to prayer. On the day of Pentecost they were all together in one place when the Spirit came. The upper room is therefore not a shrine of architecture. It is the setting of the covenant meal, the risen Lord’s peace, and the birth of the church’s common life as they waited on the promise of the Father.

A large upper room, furnished and ready. There the Lord took bread and the cup and gave the new covenant in His blood. There He washed feet. There He promised the Helper. There He stood among them after He rose and said, Peace be with you. There they waited with one accord in prayer. The room was prepared because the Lord had work to do in it. He still meets His people at the table. He still speaks peace. He still fills those who wait for the promise. Do this in remembrance of Him. Stay together. Pray. The same Lord who entered the locked room enters the gatherings of His church, and the Spirit who came at Pentecost still makes witnesses of those who wait on the Father’s promise.
