Take Up the Cross is Jesus’ call to every disciple: if anyone would come after Him, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Him.
The cross in this saying is not a piece of jewelry and not a private hardship of one’s own choosing.
It is the instrument of death that Jesus Himself would carry, and the path of costly allegiance He requires of those who follow Him.
To take up the cross is to accept the loss of self-rule, the possibility of suffering for His name, and the daily choice to follow the crucified Lord.
After Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ, Jesus began to teach that He must suffer, be killed, and on the third day be raised. Peter rebuked Him. Jesus then turned to the disciples and to the crowd and said that anyone who would come after Him must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Him. Whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for Jesus’ sake and the gospel’s will save it. In Luke the command is to take up the cross daily. The image would have been unmistakable: a man carrying his cross was a man walking to execution. Jesus was not offering a metaphor for inconvenience. He was calling disciples to die to self and to walk the same road of obedience that led Him to Golgotha. The call is not a second step for advanced believers. It is the definition of coming after Him. The One who took up His own cross now summons His people to take up theirs and follow.

He still says, Follow Me. Take up the cross. Lose your life into His hands. That is the way to find it.
