The Mark of the Beast is the identifying mark described in Revelation 13 that the second beast (the false prophet) causes all people to receive on their right hand or forehead.
It is the outward sign of allegiance to the first beast and the means by which economic participation is controlled: no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, the name of the beast, or the number of its name.
Scripture warns that anyone who receives the mark and worships the beast will drink the wine of God’s wrath and be tormented forever.
The mark stands in deliberate contrast to the seal of God placed on the foreheads of His servants.
In the vision of Revelation 13 a second beast rises out of the earth, exercises the authority of the first beast, and performs great signs. It deceives those who dwell on the earth and instructs them to make an image of the beast. It is allowed to give breath to the image so that the image can speak and cause those who refuse to worship it to be slain. Then the second beast causes all—both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. The number is calculated as 666. Later passages declare the severe judgment that falls on those who receive this mark and worship the beast or its image. They will drink the wine of God’s wrath poured full strength into the cup of His anger, and the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. In contrast, the servants of God are sealed on their foreheads with the name of the Lamb and of His Father. The mark of the beast is therefore the ultimate visible expression of rejection of God and loyalty to the final antichrist system.
- The mark is the public sign of allegiance to the beast and the false prophet.
- It is placed on the right hand or the forehead—locations of action and thought.
- Economic life is controlled by the mark: buying and selling are impossible without it.
- Receiving the mark is inseparable from worship of the beast and results in eternal judgment.
- The number of the beast is 666, calling for wisdom and calculation.
- The mark stands in direct opposition to the seal of God on the foreheads of the redeemed.
- Scripture issues the strongest possible warning against receiving the mark under any circumstance.
- Sign of Allegiance – The outward identification of those who worship the beast and its image.
- Location – Right hand or forehead, symbolizing deed and mind given to the beast.
- Economic Control – No one may buy or sell without the mark, the name, or the number of the beast.
- Number 666 – The number of the beast’s name, requiring wisdom to calculate.
- Enforced by the False Prophet – The second beast causes all to receive the mark under threat of death.
- Eternal Consequence – Those who receive it drink the full wrath of God and face everlasting torment.
- Contrast with the Seal of God – The redeemed are sealed on their foreheads with the name of God and of the Lamb.
- Revelation 13:16-18 – “Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.”
- Revelation 14:9-11 – “And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.’”
- Revelation 15:2 – “And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands.”
- Revelation 16:2 – “So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.”
- Revelation 19:20 – “And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.”
- Revelation 20:4 – “Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”
- Revelation 7:3 – “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”
- Revelation 14:1 – “Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.”
- Revelation 22:4 – “They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.”
- Deuteronomy 6:8 – “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.” (the positive counterpart of dedicating hand and forehead to God)
- Ezekiel 9:4 – “Pass through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it.”
- 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 – The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders… because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
- Revelation 13:11-15 – The second beast exercises the authority of the first beast, performs great signs, and causes those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.
The mark of the beast is the final, visible choice between allegiance to the Lamb and allegiance to the beast. It is enforced by deception, signs, and economic pressure, yet Scripture leaves no ambiguity about the consequence: those who receive it will drink the wine of God’s wrath poured full strength. The contrast is absolute—the servants of God are sealed on their foreheads with the name of the Lamb and of His Father. No temporary advantage of buying and selling can outweigh eternal torment. Therefore refuse the mark, whatever the cost. Hold fast the testimony of Jesus. Overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony. The same God who seals His own will keep those who refuse the mark of the beast, and they will reign with Christ.
