The Old Covenant
(also called the Mosaic Covenant)
is the formal agreement God established
with the nation of Israel
at Mount Sinai
after delivering them from slavery in Egypt.
It is centered on the Law given through Moses
and includes God’s
promises,
commandments,
blessings for obedience,
and curses for disobedience.
The Old Covenant prepared the way for
the New Covenant fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
The Old Covenant was inaugurated at Mount Sinai:
“Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the rules… And all the people answered with one voice and said, ‘All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.’” (Exodus 24:3)
God gave Israel the Ten Commandments and the broader law, and the covenant was sealed with the blood of sacrifices (Exodus 24:4-8). Throughout the Old Testament this covenant is referred to as the foundation of God’s special relationship with Israel.

The Old Covenant served several important purposes in God’s plan:
The Law was never intended as a means of earning salvation. It exposed sin and prepared the way for the gospel (Galatians 3:19-24).
The Old Covenant was temporary and preparatory. Jeremiah prophesied that God would make a new covenant unlike the one made at Sinai (Jeremiah 31:31-34). The book of Hebrews explains that the New Covenant is superior because it is established on better promises, has a better Mediator, and provides complete forgiveness through a once-for-all sacrifice (Hebrews 8:6-13).
When the New Covenant was inaugurated in Christ, the Old Covenant as a covenantal system reached its fulfillment and end (Hebrews 8:13).
The Old Covenant was a gracious gift from God to Israel, revealing His character and His will. Though it could not provide final forgiveness or the power of the Spirit in the same way the New Covenant does, it played an essential role in preparing for the coming of Christ. Understanding the Old Covenant helps believers appreciate both the continuity of God’s redemptive plan and the surpassing glory of the New Covenant in Jesus’ blood.
