Unclean is Scripture’s word for what cannot stand in the presence of a holy God until it is made clean.
In the law it named foods, diseases, discharges, corpses, and anything that defiled a person for worship.
The prophets used it of sin itself. The Gospels used it of evil spirits and of the outcasts Jesus touched.
Christ does not become unclean when He comes near the unclean. He makes them clean.
Leviticus taught Israel to distinguish between the clean and the unclean. Uncleanness was not always the same as willful sin.
A person could become unclean by
- a flow of blood,
- by touching a grave,
- or by eating what God had forbidden.
Uncleanness shut a person out of the camp’s holy center until washing, time, or sacrifice restored them. Behind the rules stood a holy God who was teaching a people that He is not common and that death, decay, and rebellion do not belong in His dwelling. The prophets went deeper: Israel’s hands were full of blood; even their prayers were unclean when their hearts were far from Him. Jesus met the unclean—lepers, the woman with a discharge of blood, demoniacs, Gentiles—and holiness flowed the other way. He touched the leper and the leper was clean. He declared all foods clean. He charged that it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the heart. His blood cleanses from all sin. The church is called to cleanse itself from every defilement of body and spirit, and to keep unstained from the world, while knowing that only the blood of Jesus makes the conscience clean.

- Leviticus 13:45-46 – The leper “shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean.’ He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease… He shall live alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.”
- Leviticus 15:25, 31 – A woman with a discharge of blood is unclean; “Thus you shall keep the people of Israel separate from their uncleanness, lest they die in their uncleanness by defiling my tabernacle that is in their midst.”
- Numbers 19:11-13 – Whoever touches the dead body of any person shall be unclean seven days.
- Isaiah 6:5 – “And I said: ‘Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’”
- Isaiah 64:6 – “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.”
- Ezekiel 36:25-26 – “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.”
- Haggai 2:13-14 – Uncleanness spreads by contact; so the people and the work of their hands were unclean.
- Mark 1:23, 40-42 – A man with an unclean spirit; a leper comes and Jesus touches him: “I will; be clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him.
- Mark 5:2, 25-34 – A man with an unclean spirit; a woman with a discharge of blood touches Jesus’ garment and is healed.
- Mark 7:14-23 – “There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him… For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts… All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
- Mark 7:19 – “Thus he declared all foods clean.”
- Acts 10:14-15 – “But Peter said, ‘By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.’ And the voice came to him again a second time, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’”

- 2 Corinthians 7:1 – “Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.”
- Hebrews 9:13-14 – “For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ… purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”
- 1 John 1:7, 9 – “The blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin… If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
- Revelation 21:27 – “But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
- Ephesians 5:5 – “For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”
Unclean, unclean. That was the cry the law required. It taught Israel that God is holy and that defilement cannot walk unwashed into His dwelling. The prophets showed that the deeper stain is the heart. Jesus came and touched the unclean, and they were clean. He declared what God has made clean. His blood cleanses from all sin. Do not call common what God has cleansed. Do not treat sin as a small stain. Come to the One who says, I will; be clean. Nothing unclean will enter the city. Those written in the Lamb’s book of life will. Walk in the light. Keep yourself from defilement. The Holy One still makes the unclean clean.
