Spiritual experiences are
encounters with God or the spiritual realm
that affect a person’s emotions, senses, or spirit.
They can include feelings of God’s presence,
visions, dreams, physical manifestations,
or deep inner impressions.
While the Bible records many genuine spiritual experiences,
it also warns us to test everything
and hold fast to what is good.
The Bible contains many accounts of genuine spiritual experiences:
- Old Testament: Moses at the burning bush, Isaiah’s vision of God’s glory, Ezekiel’s visions, Daniel’s dreams.
- New Testament: Paul’s encounter on the road to Damascus, John’s vision in Revelation, the disciples at Pentecost, Peter’s vision in Acts 10.
- Jesus’ ministry: People falling under the power of God, being overwhelmed by His presence, or experiencing healing and deliverance.
These experiences often resulted in deeper obedience, worship, or mission.
Not every spiritual experience is from God. The Bible gives clear principles for testing experiences:
- Does it align with Scripture? (Isaiah 8:20; 2 Timothy 3:16)
- Does it exalt Jesus Christ? (1 John 4:1-3; John 16:14)
- Does it produce godly fruit? (Matthew 7:15-20; Galatians 5:22-23)
- Does it promote holiness and obedience? (1 John 2:3-6)
- Is it submitted to godly leadership and community? (Proverbs 11:14; Hebrews 13:17)
The Holy Spirit does not contradict the written Word of God.
Healthy responses include:
- Thank God for any genuine encounter with His presence.
- Test everything by Scripture and the character of Christ.
- Seek the Giver, not just the experience.
- Remain grounded in the Word of God and sound doctrine.
- Share testimonies with humility and for God’s glory.
- Avoid chasing experiences at the expense of daily obedience.
The goal is a deeper relationship with God, not just powerful experiences.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 (“Do not quench the Spirit… test everything”)
- 1 John 4:1 (“test the spirits to see whether they are from God”)
- John 16:13-14 (the Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus)
- 2 Corinthians 11:14 (Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light)
- Galatians 5:22-23 (fruit of the Spirit as the true test)
- Acts 17:11 (the Bereans examined the Scriptures daily)
Spiritual experiences can be genuine and powerful, but they must always be tested by Scripture. The Holy Spirit’s work will always exalt Jesus, produce godly fruit, and lead to greater holiness and obedience. The greatest spiritual experience is knowing Christ and walking daily with Him in the power of the Holy Spirit.
