James the son of Zebedee was one of the Twelve apostles and the brother of John.
Jesus called him from his nets along with his brother, and he became part of the Lord’s inner circle with Peter and John.
He was present at the raising of Jairus’s daughter, the Transfiguration, and the agony in Gethsemane.
James was the first of the Twelve to die for the faith, killed by the sword under Herod Agrippa I.
James and John were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee, sons of Zebedee and partners with Simon. When Jesus called them, they left their father and the hired servants and followed Him. Jesus named the two brothers Boanerges, “Sons of Thunder,” a title that fits their fiery zeal. They once asked whether they should call down fire from heaven on a Samaritan village, and they requested seats at Jesus’ right and left in His glory. Jesus answered that they would drink the cup He drank. James did. After the resurrection and Pentecost he served among the apostles in Jerusalem until Herod Agrippa, seeking to please the Jews, killed James with the sword. He is the first of the apostolic band whose martyrdom is recorded. His life shows both the raw zeal of a disciple still being formed and the grace that made him faithful unto death.

He was the first of the Twelve to die by the sword. The Son of Thunder became a faithful witness. Jesus had told him he would drink the cup; James drank it. His brief recorded ministry and early death remind the church that closeness to Jesus is not a path around suffering but a path through it. Follow the One who called him. Be willing to drink the cup. The same Lord who took James from the boat to the inner circle, and from the inner circle to the sword, still makes Sons of Thunder into witnesses who love not their lives even unto death.
