Faith as a Grain of Mustard Seed is Jesus’ word about faith that is small in appearance and great in effect.
He said that if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move.

The saying is not a boast about the size of our believing. It is a call to trust the God for whom nothing is too hard.

In Luke the same picture is joined to forgiveness. The apostles said, “Increase our faith.” Jesus answered that faith like a mustard seed could uproot a mulberry tree and plant it in the sea. He did not scold them for needing more muscle. He pointed them to a seed. The mustard seed was proverbially small. The mountain and the tree were proverbially immovable. The contrast is the point. Real faith, even when it feels small, lays hold of the living God. The power is not in the quantity of faith as a feeling. The power is in the One who is trusted. The same Jesus who compared the kingdom to a mustard seed compared faith to that seed: what looks tiny is not nothing when it is placed in God.
