The Mustard Seed is the parable Jesus told to show what the kingdom of heaven is like.
A man took a grain of mustard seed, the smallest of all the seeds, and sowed it in his field.
It grew up and became a tree, so that the birds of the air came and made nests in its branches.
The kingdom begins small in the eyes of the world and becomes great by the purpose of God.
Jesus asked, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it?” He answered with a mustard seed. It is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows and becomes larger than all the garden plants. It puts out large branches, and the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.
Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record the parable. The point is not botany. The point is the kingdom.
What looks insignificant when it is sown will not remain small. The preaching of the kingdom began with one Man and a handful of disciples. It looked like nothing beside Rome and the temples of the age. Jesus said it would grow until the nations find a place in its branches. The prophets had spoken of a tree in which the birds nest, a picture of a kingdom that shelters the peoples. Jesus took that image and joined it to the smallest seed. The mysteries of the kingdom include this: do not despise the day of small beginnings.

Do not measure the kingdom by the size of the beginning. Do not despise the day of small things. The same Jesus who spoke this parable began with a manger, a handful of disciples, and a cross. The word has already reached the nations. The tree is still growing. One day the kingdom of the world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ. Trust the seed. Preach the word. Have faith like a grain of mustard seed. The growth belongs to God.
