The Leaven is the parable Jesus told immediately after the mustard seed to show what the kingdom of heaven is like.
A woman took leaven and hid it in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.
The kingdom works from within. It is hidden at first, and then it pervades the whole.
What looks small in the mixing bowl does not stay small.
Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” Luke records the same comparison: the kingdom of God is like leaven hidden in meal until the whole is leavened. Three measures was a large amount of flour—enough for a feast, not a single loaf. The woman hides the leaven; she does not display it. The work goes on out of sight. Then the whole batch is changed.
Placed beside the mustard seed, the parable adds an inward picture to the outward tree. The seed becomes visible growth; the leaven becomes pervasive change.
Elsewhere Jesus warned against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees—hypocrisy and false teaching that also spreads. In this parable the image is taken the other way: the kingdom itself is the hidden influence that God works through until nothing in the batch is left untouched. The mysteries of the kingdom include this quiet thoroughness. The reign of God does not arrive only as a spectacle. It works in the dough.

Do not judge the kingdom only by what is loud and visible. The King works in the dough. Beware the other leaven—hypocrisy and false teaching that also spreads. Receive the kingdom’s leaven. Let the word work through the whole of life. The same Lord who hid the leaven will not stop until His purpose is complete. Of the increase of His government there will be no end.
