Take Up My Yoke is Jesus’ invitation to the weary and heavy laden:
take His yoke upon you and learn from Him,
for He is gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
A yoke joins two together for work;
Jesus does not call people to a heavier law but to Himself.
Those who take His yoke
exchange the crushing load of self and of empty religion
for the rest that comes from walking with the gentle King.
After declaring that all things had been handed over to Him by the Father, Jesus spoke to the crowds who labored under weariness. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” In that world a yoke was the wooden bar that joined oxen to the plow. Teachers also spoke of the yoke of the law or the yoke of a rabbi’s teaching. Jesus offers His own yoke. To take it up is to come under His authority and to learn His way. The rest He gives is not idleness. It is the rest of a soul that no longer carries what it was never meant to carry, joined to the One who is gentle and lowly. The same Lord who commands disciples to take up the cross also commands the weary to take up His yoke. Both belong to following Him: death to self, and rest in His meekness.

Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me. That is the Lord’s word to the weary. He does not offer a heavier yoke than the one you already carry. He offers Himself. He is gentle and lowly in heart. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Rest for the soul is found not by laying down all obedience but by taking up His yoke and walking with Him. Do not go back under a yoke of slavery. Do not keep carrying what He has told you to cast on Him. Come. Take the yoke. Learn from the One who washed feet and bore the cross. You will find rest for your soul.
