¶ Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth
Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth is Jesus’ own description of the anguish of those cast out at the final judgment.
He used the phrase of the outer darkness, of the fiery furnace, and of the place where the hypocrites and the unprepared are assigned.
It is not a figure meant to soften the warning.
It is the Lord’s word about real loss, real exclusion, and real torment for those who are shut out of the kingdom.
Again and again Jesus ended a parable or a warning with this sentence: there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The sons of the kingdom who refuse the King’s terms are thrown into outer darkness.
- The weeds are gathered and burned.
- The bad fish are thrown away.
- The man without a wedding garment is bound and cast out.
- The worthless servant is put in the dark.
- The unready are shut out when the bridegroom comes.
Weeping speaks of grief and despair. Gnashing of teeth speaks of rage, pain, and the bitter recognition that the door is shut. The phrase belongs to the teaching of Jesus, not to later invention. He is the One who spoke most clearly about hell, and He did so while offering mercy. The warning stands beside the gospel of the kingdom: the same King who invites also judges, and the same harvest that gathers the wheat burns the weeds.

In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Jesus said it of those thrown into outer darkness and of those thrown into the fiery furnace. He said it of the guest without a garment, the worthless servant, the hypocrite, and those who are shut out while Abraham and the prophets sit in the kingdom. The warning is mercy while the door is still open. Do not trade on a name without a new heart. Do not assume a seat you have refused on the King’s terms. Enter while He calls. Wash your robes in the blood of the Lamb. The same Lord who spoke of wailing and gnashing of teeth still says, Come. The door will not stay open forever.
