King of Israel is the royal title that belongs to the Messiah, the Son of David who would rule God’s people in righteousness.
Nathanael confessed it when he met Jesus. The crowds shouted it at the triumphal entry. Pilate had it written above the cross.
Jesus is the true King of Israel—not a political pretender, but the promised King whose throne is everlasting.
All the hopes bound up with David’s line find their yes in Him.
God promised David a son whose throne would be established forever. The prophets spoke of a coming King who would reign in justice from Zion and gather the scattered people of God. When Philip brought Nathanael to Jesus, Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” At the triumphal entry the crowds cried, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” Pilate’s inscription read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” and the chief priests objected that He had only said He was the King of Israel. Jesus did not deny the title. He is the King, yet His kingdom is not of this world in the manner the leaders expected. He entered Jerusalem on a donkey in fulfillment of Zechariah. He was crowned with thorns. He now reigns at the right hand of God, and He will return as King of kings. The title King of Israel is therefore both the confession of faith and the fulfillment of the Davidic promise.

Jesus is the King of Israel, the son of David whose throne is forever. He did not come down from the cross to prove it; He stayed on the cross to accomplish it. He now reigns. He will return as King of kings. Confess Him as Nathanael did. Welcome Him as the crowds did—and do not turn away as the rulers did. The King of Israel is in your midst. Of His kingdom there will be no end.
