From the law of Moses to the book of Acts, the Bible treats occult practices as detestable to the Lord. Israel was forbidden to practice divination, interpret omens, consult mediums, or seek the dead. Such things were the ways of the nations the Lord was driving out, and they defiled the land. In the New Testament, those who practiced magic in Ephesus burned their books when they believed. Simon the magician was rebuked for thinking the gift of God could be bought. Elymas the magician was struck blind for opposing the gospel. The word “occult” itself means “hidden,” but Scripture exposes these works as darkness. They promise secret knowledge and power while actually enslaving people to fear, deception, and demonic influence.
