Teaching and the Testimony is the standard Isaiah set against every rival voice that claims hidden knowledge.
When people say, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers,” the prophet answers: To the teaching and to the testimony.
If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn.
The phrase points to the revealed Word of God as the only sure light by which His people are to test every spirit, every vision, and every claim.
In a time of fear and political crisis, Judah was tempted to turn to mediums and necromancers who chirped and muttered. Isaiah confronted that temptation with a single measure: the teaching and the testimony. The teaching is the instruction God has given; the testimony is His confirmed Word. Together they form the rule by which every other word is judged. If a message does not agree with what God has already spoken, it has no dawn—no true light. Jesus and the apostles stand in the same stream. Jesus said the Scriptures testify of Him. The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to see if the things they heard were so. John wrote that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy and that every spirit must be tested. Teaching and the testimony therefore remain the church’s safeguard: not secret inquiry, not inner impressions detached from Scripture, but the Word God has given, sufficient and clear.

The Word God has spoken does not. If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. Inquire of your God. Examine the Scriptures. Test the spirits. The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy, and the Scriptures bear witness about Him. Hold fast the teaching. Seal the testimony among the disciples. The lamp is already shining in a dark place. Pay attention to it until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
