Sound Doctrine is teaching that is healthy, true to the gospel, and able to make people sound in the faith.
Paul charged Timothy and Titus to teach what accords with sound doctrine and to silence what does not.
It is not a hobby of arguments. It is the pattern of sound words about God, Christ, salvation, and the life that follows.
Where sound doctrine is lost, love, holiness, and hope soon follow it out the door.
In the pastoral letters Paul returns again and again to the same concern. There are many rebellious people, empty talkers, and deceivers. They upset households. They teach for shameful gain. They wander into myths. Against that noise the church must hold the trustworthy word as taught, so that the elder may give instruction in sound doctrine and also rebuke those who contradict it.
Sound means healthy.
Doctrine means teaching.
Sound doctrine is teaching that produces spiritual health because it agrees with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God.
It includes
- the confession of one God,
- the incarnation of Christ,
- His appearing,
- His ransom for all,
- the grace that trains us to renounce ungodliness, and
- the hope of His appearing.
It is to be taught to older men and women, to the young, to bondservants, and to the whole church. It cannot be separated from a sound life. The aim of the charge is love that issues from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.

- Public Charge – Elders and preachers are commanded to teach it and to rebuke error.
- Watched Life – Teaching and conduct must walk together.
- Passed On – Entrusted to faithful people who will teach others also.
- Titus 1:9 – “He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.”

- Jude 1:3 – “Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”
- 2 John 1:9-10 – “Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
Teach what accords with sound doctrine.
Hold firm the trustworthy word. Follow the pattern of the sound words. Guard the good deposit.
The time comes when people will not endure sound teaching. That is not a reason to soften the word. It is a reason to preach it.
Sound doctrine is the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, and it trains a people to live holy lives while they wait for the blessed hope.
Watch your life and your teaching. Speak the truth in love. Do not trade healthy words for myths that itch the ear.
The church that keeps sound doctrine keeps the faith once for all delivered to the saints.
