Reign with Christ is the promised sharing of the redeemed in the kingly authority and rule of the risen Lord Jesus.
Those who overcome, who remain faithful unto death, and who share in the first resurrection will sit with Christ on His throne and reign with Him.
This reign is both a future reality in the millennial kingdom and the eternal state, and a present spiritual participation in His victory.
The promise assures every believer that suffering and faithfulness will be answered by the privilege of ruling with the King of kings.
From the beginning of the church’s story, Scripture holds out the hope that the people of God will share in the reign of their Messiah. Jesus told the apostles that they would sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Paul wrote that if we endure, we will also reign with Him. In Revelation the promise is repeated and expanded: the one who conquers will sit with Christ on His throne; those who have been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus come to life and reign with Christ for a thousand years; the servants of God will reign forever and ever. This shared reign is the outworking of the believer’s union with Christ. Because we have died with Him and been raised with Him, we are also seated with Him in the heavenly places and will share in His open rule when He returns. The reign is not the assertion of human power but the gracious gift of the King who delights to share His victory and authority with those He has redeemed.
- Reigning with Christ is the promised privilege of those who overcome and remain faithful.
- It is grounded in the believer’s union with the death, resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus.
- The reign includes both the millennial period and the eternal state.
- Present suffering and endurance are the path that leads to future reigning.
- The promise is given to encourage perseverance under persecution and trial.
- Those who share in the first resurrection are the ones who reign with Christ.
- The final form of the reign is everlasting: they will reign forever and ever.
- Union with Christ – The foundation of the shared reign is having died and been raised with Him.
- Promise to Overcomers – The one who conquers is granted to sit with Christ on His throne.
- Millennial Reign – Those who come to life in the first resurrection reign with Christ for a thousand years.
- Eternal Reign – In the new heaven and new earth the servants of God reign forever and ever.
- Royal Priesthood – The redeemed are made a kingdom and priests who shall reign on the earth.
- Judgment Authority – Authority to judge is committed to those seated on the thrones.
- Encouragement in Suffering – The hope of reigning sustains believers through present trials.
- Revelation 20:4, 6 – “Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God… They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years… Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.”

- Revelation 5:9-10 – “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
- 1 Corinthians 6:2-3 – “Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world?… Do you not know that we are to judge angels?”
- Luke 22:28-30 – “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

- Daniel 7:18, 27 – “But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever… And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom…”

- 1 Peter 2:9 – “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession…”
If we endure, we will also reign with Him. The promise is sure. Those who share in the first resurrection, those who overcome, those who remain faithful unto death, will sit with Christ on His throne and reign with Him. The present path may lead through suffering, rejection, and even death, but the end is royal authority shared with the King of kings. Already believers are seated with Christ in the heavenly places; the day is coming when that hidden position becomes open and everlasting reign. Therefore endure. Hold fast the testimony of Jesus. Overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony. The One who conquered and sat down with His Father will grant the overcomer to sit with Him. And they will reign forever and ever.
